Search Engine Optimization (SEO) Copywriting

Fine. I get it … SEO is important. Just one question: What the heck is SEO??

Well … here’s what it isn’t:

It’s not a magic bullet.

It’s not a mystical science.

Simply put, it’s just a simple way to enhance your content to increase the likelihood that when someone searches for something in Google, Bing, or Yahoo!, your website will appear prominently in the search results.

Here’s a quick example:

Let’s say you own a company making and marketing your own all-natural pet food. You have a great website detailing all of your products, and great information.

Now let’s say I have a dog, and I think it’s time he deserved a treat. So I go to my computer, open up my web browser, go to Google or another search provider, and type in: “Natural Dog Food”. Then I click search, and what I get is a bunch of results; actually, a big bunch. I did this just now, and I got about 28 million results. And at about 10 results or so per page, well, that’s a lot of pages.

How much would it mean to your business if you were on page one, or even two, of those search results, instead of page 2.8 million, or even page 28?!

Have you ever searched for your business on Google to see where you rank? You probably should; that’s what many of your potential customers are doing. Are they finding you, or your competitor? I would want to know that.

Is it possible to trick the search engines? Yes. Should you be doing that? ABSOLUTELY NOT!!

Search engines actually have the searcher's best interests at heart. They want and need people to have the best search experience every time they type a search term in their search boxes. Their business depends on it.

When you type something into Google, or any other search engine, they will actually try their hardest to give you exactly what you’re looking for. That’s the only way for them to keep you coming back. So they will try and find you the best match, and provide you with the best content.

That’s why the best foundation for SEO has little to do with SE, or O for that matter, and that’s why I always strive to look at the big picture.

The best SEO copywriting starts with great and compelling content. Content that, once found, will have real value in it, and it will be worth reading and worth sharing.

Once you have content like this, search engines will take notice.

Search engines have complicated algorithms, or ways to determine if your content is valuable or not. Many of these factors you can control, some you can’t. Some depend on what happens on your page, some depend on what happens off your page.

Can I get you to #1 on Google? I’ve done it, but it depends on many factors.

Can I guarantee it? No. Because again, it depends on many factors. If anyone tells you they can guarantee it, I would nod politely, take a couple of steps back, turn, and run.

What I can do is either create or edit your page, and optimize your content to make it more in tune with how people are searching, to increase the chance that you will appear higher in the search results.

To help be the fish that’s caught when someone drops a line in the ocean that is the internet!
